Lights Off, Fireflies On!
Helping to keep our firefly population twinkling for generations to come
Fireflies, also known as Lightning Bugs, are a precious pastime in the North Georgia Mountains and a great way to make memories with your family.
Everyone can play a role in protecting our fireflies! Start with turning your lights off at night and planting wildflowers, such as milkweed, in your backyard. Click here to learn more about fireflies and our partnership with UGA Extension.
International Firefly Day, also known as World Firefly Day, is celebrated annually during the first weekend of July. The primary goal of the celebration is to raise awareness about the importance of fireflies and the threats they face. To piggy back on International Firefly Day, Fannin County Government declared July 2nd Fannin County Firefly Day as a way to emphasis our Lights Off, Fireflies On! campaign started in 2023. On July 2nd, turn off your outdoor lights, head outside with the family and enjoy the light show!
