Overview
The Humans by Stephen Karam
In the Black Box Theater- an intimate venue for breathtaking performances
Directed by Michael Berkman
Stephen Karam’s The Humans is a haunting, darkly comic family drama that captures the anxieties of modern life with honesty and empathy. Set in a Chinatown apartment on Thanksgiving, the play follows the Blake family as they gather to celebrate the holiday. Over the course of one evening, secrets emerge, tensions flare, and unspoken fears about health, money, and mortality bubble to the surface. Blending sharp humor with unsettling suspense, The Humans is a deeply relatable portrait of what it means to be human in an uncertain world.
Premiering on Broadway in 2016 after an acclaimed Off-Broadway run, The Humans received widespread critical praise and went on to win the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play, as well as the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Obie Awards. It was also named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
