PEAKS is a collaborative program of the Institute for Healthy Aging, the Blue Ridge campus and the community. On UNG’s Blue Ridge campus, PEAKS In-Person offers free weekly presentations and workshops designed for adults 55+ to create and connect a community of lifelong learners and doers. The summer season of weekly presentations and workshops will be held on Thursdays,. There are several classes each Thursday in various timeslots. Please check schedule below.. Tai Chi: An Exercise For Lifelong Well-Being
Presented by: Anthony Karnavas
Participate in a basic introduction to Tai Chi movement based on a family style that leverages both the Yang and Chen styles with large movements, the opportunity for low stances and movements that can range from easy to strenuous yet are always fluid. Learn from a lifelong student and teacher of Tai Chi and other martial arts the basic practices and benefits of Tai Chi.
Learn to slow your mind to maintain control under stress or when fatigued, proper dynamic flexibility to compliment static stretching and other workouts and a heightened awareness of movement and posture (the mind/body connection) enabling the development of healthy body mechanics. All ages and abilities will benefit. Wear comfortable clothing.

Have you ever wondered about what lives under the hood of your car and how to take care of it? Learn from a mechanic some of the basics such as how to change the oil, check tire pressure, refill windshield wiper fluid and check other fluids. Come see this live demonstration and learn how to save money by avoiding repair shops and become better prepared for unexpected situations.

Am I Losing It?

Everyone occasionally misplaces their keys, wallet, purse, or can’t quickly remember a name. Is it early dementia? Learn what is and what isn’t signs you are losing it. What are normal cognitive changes associated with aging? Learn about dementia and be given the opportunity to take an anonymous screening test to see if a dementia workup is recommended.

If you have ever considered learning to become a backyard wine grower, come learn about grape varieties that will do well in our area. Hear about the upkeep and work that is required and learn some common mistakes to avoid. Enjoy the opportunity to sample and see if you like what you taste.
*There will be a $5 charge for participating in this session to cover cost of wine tasting. You will pay the presenter before the session begins. Only cash will be accepted.

Technology Workshop
Introduction to the World of Generative Artificial Intelligence*
Presented by: Jed Rothrock, John Rutland, Mike Rogers, and Bill Furtwengler
Purposes: To help participants understand the basics of AI, how it differs from human intelligence, how AI programs are created and how to take advantage of existing AI data bases.
This tech session will include video clips about aspects of generative AI, how AI models are created and AI’s implications for our daily living. We will discuss how best to adjust to the expected rapid technology changes ahead. Topics for discussion may include examples of how to use generative language AI data bases, tech problem-solving using YouTube instructional videos, reviewing Apple’s many tutorial resources, and the benefits of using free online Apple support. Cautions about the over reliance on the products from large AI data bases will be presented.

North Georgia Community Action & Its Agencies
Presented by: Pam Godfrey
As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, NGCA, Inc. offers programs and services that serve northwest Georgia, including Fannin and Gilmer. Learn how this organization in partnership with the community assists the economically disadvantaged, elderly, as well as those facing a temporary crisis. Discuss the funding for these services. Learn how the local senior center helps to ensure seniors receive a daily nutritious meal, have daily social contact and interaction to avoid isolation and ensures seniors stay active and involved. Gain awareness of how MATS (Mountain Area Transportation System) provides public transportation for citizens in Gilmer, Gordon, Fannin and Pickens and how a weatherization program helps reduce home heating and cooling costs for some of the community’s vulnerable citizens.
