Lake Blue Ridge Dam Safety Study
You may have seen this in press releases from TVA, here is some information on work you may see going on at the Lake Blue Ridge Dam, that we received from TVA;
"Recent evaluations of conditions at Blue Ridge Dam indicate its safety could be enhanced by modifications. A study at Blue Ridge is beginning now to identify and mitigate any potential risks associated with continued long-term operations to ensure safety for generations to come. More information on next steps is included below:
As early as the first week of February, barring delays, you will start to see various heavy equipment being staged at Blue Ridge Dam.
That equipment will be used to perform drilling work at the dam as part of an ongoing comprehensive study to inform whether any modification/remediation work is necessary to increase dam safety. This study is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2026.
A similar study, featuring similar drilling work and timeline, is also scheduled to commence at nearby Chatuge Dam the second week of January.
Beyond structural focus, TVA’s dam safety assessments also include thorough considerations of nuanced potential impacts on multiple surrounding communities. Serious consideration must be given to potential loss of life and property risk for all communities, particularly those downstream. The assessments also consider the potential economic and recreation impacts, particularly for those communities on reservoirs.
TVA is committed to maintaining clear and open communication throughout the duration of the dam safety study. We understand that the presence of equipment and workers at and around the dam is likely to lead to questions. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me anytime we can answer these questions or provide information on the work TVA’s experts are performing to keep the surrounding communities safe – efforts we’ve prioritized for the last 90 years."
