Overview
The Foreigner by Larry Shue
Main Stage Performance
Directed by Joey Nicolella
The Foreigner by Larry Shue is a wildly funny, clever comedy about misunderstanding, discovery, and the unexpected power of silence. The story follows Charlie Baker, a painfully shy Englishman who takes refuge at a rural fishing lodge in Georgia. To avoid awkward conversation, he pretends not to understand English — only to find himself overhearing more than he bargained for. As secrets, schemes, and outrageous antics unfold around him, Charlie transforms from a timid outsider into an unlikely hero. Full of eccentric characters, sharp wit, and side-splitting situations, The Foreigner delivers nonstop laughter while also celebrating kindness, courage, and friendship.
Since its premiere in 1983, The Foreigner has been one of the most-produced comedies in American theater. It went on to win two Obie Awards (Best New American Play and Performance) and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play, earning its place as a beloved modern classic.
